224 Valkyrie Reloading and Ammunition / IMR4166
« on: October 17, 2021, 04:43:01 PM »
Out of respect for DD I didn't want to high-jack his thread about RE 15.5, which I will keep my eyes out for. So I'll start a new thread.
IMR 4166 has been available at Brownells or hit and miss at a gun shop a couple of hours drive from here this summer and I've accumulated a few pounds. While I've not loaded the Val with it yet (coming soon) it has totally won me over. Whatever Varget can do it can do as good or better.
5.56, .223, 6BR,6x47,6.5CM, have all been impressive. I'll follow up when I can get some tested in the Val.

224 Valkyrie General Discussion / better factory ammo
« on: October 01, 2021, 05:20:33 PM »
Been a while since I posted anything worthwhile, but I had an experience with some of the newer factory ammo lately.
Brass being non existent I had some to be rotated out and bought some factory ammo abundantly available at my lgs to replace the brass.
I bought the Federal 90gr er's and was impressed before shooting ended. It was a hot day and the barrel cleanliness was less than
normal. Groups started normally, around 1.5" but to my amazement began to shrink. By the time I had used up the box, groups were
in the .400 range. Moral of the story I guess is the factory ammo might not be so bad and my Wilson Combat barrel might just
like it kinda dirty and hot.

I think Chuck is right. Maybe check with a bullet comparator, those 75's should be hitting the lands at a COAL around 2.10 or so.
Cheers.

Right on DD. A $20 muzzle break and adjustable gas block makes felt recoil no more than the bolt cycling. Better than the 6 ARC.

God is good always. Keep rolln' DD.

Ahh the mystique of the Val. I have the same barrel . Spent a lot of time on the phone with W/C trying to figure out the inaccuracy problems . Just have to find the secret combo.

DD is spot on with this cal. Your usual go to methods of load development are kinda out the window. You'll gain a very large collection of bullets, powder, and a splendid colorful vocabulary. When you find the combo it likes it's amazing how they will shoot. With that W/C barrel try seating the 77SMK's at 2.160. That I believe is Sierra's recommended depth. They shoot in the 4's in mine with 28.5gr RE-17.

You stated that your longest range was 1100 so for that range a 1 in 6.5  would suit you well cause I assume you will be using 90 or 95 grain bullets for that range in competition.

Millions of new FIRST time gun owners is a reflection of the riots that went unchecked starting last summer. Law abiding folks decided that they needed to protect themselves and their families because the gubment will not! Ammo is gone because of that, not some conspiracy. This time is different because a massive amount of shooters decided to start reloading. That hasn't happened in the past. They will struggle through getting going, then factory ammo will be plentiful again and they will forget about handloading, thus returning things to their natural state. Happens all the time it seems, at least in my lifetime under any democrat president. (not counting sleepy joe cause he ain't president of anything)

Same deal hear Xaddo. Early and bored. Sounds like that Grendel had a tight chamber. Don't know why but I had a terrible time getting a Grendel barrel that was chambered correctly. The one that was correct is actually an ARP barrel. It shoots a 123gr ELD in the 2500fps area at around quarter moa. Love the Valkyrie too, it's longest range coyote taken was laser ranged at 709 yds. He just sat there like "naw that guy ain't shootin at me" and let me miss the first shot. They both have their use for me. But as far as the 6.5x47 goes I couldn't agree more. Got a 700 action that was a 6.5 CM and a Boyd's pro varmint already hogged out for a Criterion Remage barel. Just gettin time to get on it is the problem!

Your rifle will likely be different from others but a 69 SMK is much shorter than an 88 ELD with a different ogive type . You will likely not have any bullet left in the case trying to touch the lands with it.

Out of the powders you listed maybe try Varget first. Got some okay groups with mine and 69SMK back before there were any bullets available at all. Don't worry about your freebore. Just load em to Sierra's suggested coal and save yourself the hassle because it will lead to nothing but angst. Your rifle will group with some combination of bullet and powder it may just take longer than you want it to. Welcome to the group  8)
