88 ELD Match Load
« on: December 18, 2020, 08:51:37 PM »
Fishing to see if someone has a load that is in the same exterior ballistics of the 88 ELD in any lighter bullets.

24" BSF 6.5 twist, YHM Phantom suppressor.  Starline cases, CCI #41, COAL 2.255", Hornady 88 ELD - 26.3 CFE 223 (max), or 26.7 BLC2 (over max).  I find the BLC2 more consistent.  In 3-shot groups from a sandbag at 100 yards, I usually get 2 almost touching.  With BLC2 I'm more consistent at under 1 MOA with the BLC2.  The CFE223 is hit and miss with frequent 1.5" flyers.  I just got N540 as my last try before finalizing my load.  I'm not a competitive shooter so the rifle is far more capable than I.

I have an ARP 20" 7.7 twist build that I need to do more work with as well to confirm the performance of the load in that upper.

As far as I can tell, from any published data anywhere, there is no lighter bullet that meets these exterior ballistics:

300 yards 1,090 ft lbs.  400 yards 955 ft lbs.  500 yards 833 ft lbs.  From Hornady calculator.  .545 G1 BC.

I often hear someone say xx is xxxx FPS - but don't seem to realize that the lighter bullets with lower BCs lose so much energy down range.

I do want to try the 90 grain Sierras to see if I get get the groups tighter more consistently.   Any actual data, experience,  & results on that would be appreciated.

Varget was the only powder I was able to get a consistent 10 shot group at or under MOA and repeat it. The load was sourced from here, 23.6 grains of Varget with the 88ELD
