1,000 yard load
« on: August 11, 2018, 12:03:24 PM »
Hello out there I'm checking to see if anyone has worked up a round for 1k benchrest that shoots well. I'm working up my brass now and plan to start with SMK 90s. I've got a 7 twr barrel and am hoping these stabilize ok.
Also any thoughts on chamber dimensions? Tight vs loose necks? Freebore? Any input would be very welcome

I have several hundred rounds on 1000 yard targets. Tried several projectile/ powder combos. Landed on 88 gr ELDs and Re-15. 25 grains at 2.300" (max that fits in my Grendel mags) I think I have the out of spec chamber. ELDs are jumping .020+ loaded at 2.3". 24" barrel btw. 7twist
Solid 1/2 moa load but I can only keep it a little under 1 moa at 1000 consistently. It has shot several smaller groups in the 3 to 4" range ( one 2.5")but 7-8" is more the norm

Just realized we were on the bolt gun page! Are you talking bolt action? If so FYI I'm shooting an AR

Yes I'm shooting bolt action. Have a R700 (tweaked action) with a Bartlein Heavy Palma 1:7 twr. The barrel's not chambered yet and I haven't decided on a barrel length.

I'd frame that 1/4 MOA at 1,000 yards target! Too bad you're having a tough time getting it to repeat. That's my goal - a repeatable 1/4 MOA at 1K yds. My problem is finding a 1,000 yd range where I can shoot paper, all the local ranges are metallic targets from 400 out to 1k.

If you get one doing repeatable .25 moa at 1K you will win a lot of matches! Please keep us in the loop as to how it's progressing. I, at first, didn't understand why anyone would want a Valkyrie in a bolt action with all the other options ( for eg. I've been shooting a 6.5x47 Lapua
for a year now and it is a really good round for paper and a hammer on game). But after nearly 1000 rounds through my AR Valkyrie ( I'm not really an AR kinda guy) I see the merits of this round in a bolt gun. My next project will be bolt action Valkyrie!

Just got my build done and loaded up some test ammo last wknd. Ill be going out to the range Thanksgiving wknd to see how they do and to "break in" the barrel. I have a Impact Precision action, 24 inch 5R- 1 in 6.5 twist Bartlien barrel. Ill be mainly loading 90gr bullets first, including Sierra 90gr SMKs, Berger 90gr VLDs and Hornady 88gr ELDMs. My rig sits in a MDT ESS chassis stock and has a Seekins muzzle brake. The barrel is a Barlien Whitley contour, (like a heavy Palma). Im also using a Trigger Tech trigger set at 1.5lbs. Sitting on top is a Bushnell HDMRII 3.5x21 with a H59 reticle. My initial loads start at 24gr of Varget and H4895 and go up to 26gr in half grain increments initially. I may not make it up to the 26gr due to pressure signs. We'll see.

How’s the Barrel working for you?
Need to Barrel a Rem 700 Police in 6.8 SPC with a .224 Valkyrie and was looking for advise.

Its working out better than I expected. It shoots less than 1moa with all my loads and bullets I chose. Some groups are better than others but everything was less than 1moa.

Well a couple were slightly over but most deviations were my fault getting used to the new rifle.

24” Long, 1 in 6.5 Twist, 5R Bartlein Barrel?

Is the way to start off?

Is yours w/ AICS Mag?

I'm using MDT 223 mags modified by Buch Holly of C&H Precision Weapons Syestem (CHWPS). They work flawlessly with my Impact Precision bolt action although they only hold 8 rounds. It's like an AICS mag. Yes about your question about my barrel. It is exactly that. Talk to Mark at Bartlein he will fix you up.
